The “Frère Dumay Collège” elementary school

Jumecourt is a small neighborhood in the municipality of Croix des Bouquets, a few kilometers East of the capital, Port-au-Prince. It is a dusty and windy place with few trees and little water. Still, many families live there in small huts. The parents have trouble finding employment and often do not have the means to send their children to school.

A Haitian couple, Wongglère J. Sully and Emile Dumay, lost their home due to the devastating earthquake of 12 January 2010. They planned to build a new house on a piece of land on Route de Malpasse in Jumecourt. But when they saw the dire conditions the children there lived in, they changed their plans and built an elementary school for children from the poorest families instead.  Each year, about 200 children went to school in one of eight classes at the “Frère Dumay Collège”.

Wongglère J. Sully and Emile Dumay’s project aims:

The “Frère Dumay Collège” offers education for free. Like many other schools, in spite of the PSUGO program, it has received no funding from the State until today. After the earthquake, countless organizations came to Haiti and the founders obtained support from several NGOs and multilateral stakeholders. However, these foreign sponsors started deserting Haiti two years after the quake and like many other projects, the “Frère Dumay Collège” lost its contributors. Wongglère J. Sully earns some money through her private organization, “Communication Multiple”, for instance by teaching Haitian Creole in international organizations. But the money is by far too little to finance the school.

On the short term, the school needs financial support:
